In the summer of 2013, the Danger Golf World Cup, dubbed the "War of Attrition," became infamous for its disastrous format. The tournament, plagued by a poorly designed structure and a loophole in the eliminator rules, turned into the longest and most excruciating event in history, lasting an agonizing six and a half hours. The excitement promised was overshadowed by the endless rounds and strategic stagnation that left fans and players alike exhausted.
It was a scorching 26 degrees outside and the 2013 Danger Golf World Championship kicked off the 5th Official DGWC in true style. We had newcomers and veterans gracing the playing grounds, underdogs triumphing and favourites falling at the early hurdles. The 2013 DGWC truly was a spectacle not to have been missed.
As the sun set over Landor, the ordeal finally came to an end with Ireland emerging as the champions after a grueling final against Lovely. Despite the marathon of frustration, Ireland's victory was a bright spot in an otherwise dismal spectacle.
As per tradition, the participants all exposed themselves to the expected training and acclimatisation processes before the day of the event. And as per tradition the worst affected were clearly visible the following morning over the "Spoons breakfast". It is widely considered the more you eat in the Wetherspoons environment, the more acclimatised you are for the task ahead. There were plenty of "Large Breakfasts" and a few "Traditional Breakfast", but most surprising of all was the opting of the pathetic "Eggs Benedict" by Sir Horlock from England and the complete refusal of breakfast by Sir Gaskin of Bolivia.
Adding a unique twist to the tournament was the Car-Cam, a remote-controlled vehicle equipped with advanced video technology. It captured the event from ground level, providing a fascinating and sometimes chaotic view of the proceedings. This innovative feature, though overshadowed by the tournament's length, offered a novel perspective on the event.
As the teams arrived at the stadium the grounds men laid down the law due to the iconic "Pot Smash of 2012" by Sir Gaskin, restricting the playing grounds to green areas only, and opened the grounds for play.
In the end, the 2013 Danger Golf World Cup was remembered for its unprecedented duration and Ireland's hard-fought triumph, with the Car-Camโs footage highlighting the day's unusual and challenging moments.
Another new addition to this years ground-breaking DGWC was the introduction of the Car-Cam. This formidable remote controlled car was fully equipped with the latest video capturing technology and was able to get right into the action and capture all the chaos that ensued!ย
